 | Hello and welcome to James Smart Fly Rods. I make Hand Made Split Cane Fly Rods using the best selected bamboo culms right through to the nickel ferrules and English twist snake guides. The finishing process includes guides wrapped with the finest gossamer silk and then dipped with multiple coats of high quality spar varnish.
The following pages will give you an insight into the technical rod making process. From the initial splitting of the bamboo through to the final planing and varnishing. This is just a very brief look into the work that goes into these beautiful timeless fishing tools.
All my rods are hand planed by me in my workshop, I do not use any power tools to make my blanks it is all done by hand .Rods can take between 40-60 hours to complete over many weeks.

I am able to make a variety of rods in different tapers, from slow action rods right through to fast tapers, depending on what the customer wants. My personal favourite rods are medium fast action that have been flamed and finished with transparent wraps, however, your tastes may differ to mine so if you are interested contact me and let me know what you require and I will try to help. |
I fly fish for lots of different species including Brown and Rainbow Trout and also Chub, Dace and Perch. Which believe me is great fun on a lightl 6ft+ cane rod. If you have not given it a go I can certainly recommend it.
